How to establish a kick-ass morning routine to get shit done – Part 1

All my life, I’ve been a night owl.

As a student, I’ve stayed up late to study.

As an adult in my 20s, I’ve stayed up late to surf social media and watch youtube. Sometimes to finish off work.

And I loved it. I loved working through the night even though I struggled to wake up in the morning.

It was a constant struggle to wake up feeling refreshed even after sleeping at 3am and waking up at around 11am.

So once I hit 30s, I made a decision to switch my life around. I wanted a morning routine that would set the day right for myself. Something that gets me started well. Like a plane preparing for takeoff. Really slow at the start but once you hit the runway you know you’re going at maximum speed.

It’s been about a year of experimentation now and I’ve managed to come up with a routine that works best for me. Something that’s set in stone and works like a charm.

Enter: My Morning Routine

4am – Goal Setting & Visualisation

I wake up at 4 in the morning. And I don’t hit the snooze button on my alarm clock anymore. I just jump out of bed excited to get stuff done. Trust me, I’ve struggled a lot with this before and it took a lot of mistakes along the way to get this key habit right.

This is the time I go through all my goals and dreams. What I really want to achieve in life. Beginning with the end in mind. The reason I do this is because visualisation gives me energy.

Many people think visualisation is a lame exercise…it doesn’t work..etc. That’s because they don’t know they right ways to visualise. When you visualise properly, you get energised. And when you have the energy, you are able to actualise everything into reality. Whatever it is that you are dreaming of.

Starting the day right with visualisation allows you to be in the right frame of mind throughout the day. Instead of wafting through the day (and life) by allowing it to show you the way, I choose to remind myself daily on what I want from life.

415am – My Priority Projects

From 4:15am to 5:30am, I work on those projects that will give me the most leverage in my line of work. It is building my business one brick block at a time.

Have you read the book, “The One Thing” by Gary Keller.

It’s a fabulous book and it talks about focusing on the most important work everyday. It could be a project that spans a few months or it could be the most important work for that one day.

As an Entrepreneur, you have your daily hustle to take care of. It keeps you busy for the day. The priority projects are what you do to build assets in your business. The more assets you have, the easier your business will run. Period.

I have accomplished more in this block of time than I have over the years, writing ‘plans’ to do this and do that.

530am – Morning Run

I go for my morning run on weekdays for about 1 Km. It’s not much if you consider the distance, but I run 5 days a week. And it keeps me fit and allows me to gorge on the foods I love.

I can’t emphasise the importance of exercise enough. If you don’t have a regular exercise regime now, it will come back to haunt you later.

Your body is your temple and it is your duty to keep it fit and healthy.

6am – Cold Shower

Right after the run, I get into a cold shower. There are a lot of benefits of getting into a cold shower. That’s for another article. But the point is to practice shocking your system in the morning to build its’ resilience. Now it doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy hot showers anymore. I do. I just don’t have a hot shower in the mornings anymore. Cold showers have the power of energising your system while hot showers tend to relax it.

615am – Meditation

Right after the cold shower, I sit down to meditate. It is the simple art of monitoring the thoughts going through your mind.

Think of it as standing on an overhead bridge and watching all the cars whizz by. Your thoughts are the cars. You are the observer on the bridge. And yet, sometimes, we get dragged away by certain cars (thoughts).

Meditation a practice where you focus on keeping a distance from the thoughts running through your head. It’s a practice to allow the mud to settle so that you can get clarity within yourself.

I can’t emphasise how important this exercise is. Try it!

7am – Coaching Call

Everyday, at 7am, I have a call with my coach. We talk about the different things that need to be done, new developments, new challenges and how to overcome those. Having the right coach is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career growth. Have no doubts about that.

8am – Rock N Roll

Eat breakfast like a king and rule the day that comes at you.

That’s it for part 1.

In the next part of this series, I’m going to talk about the essentials you need to get right to have a kick-ass morning routine.

Stay tuned!
